Natural Pool on a Steep Slope

It was the last plot of land available for development, with a stunning view of Pfronten and the mountains of the eastern Allgäu. The plan was to build a new home in a contemporary Allgäu architectural style. And a natural pool for the garden was right at the top of the wish list. There was just one problem: The land was on a very steep slope. Regular coursed rubble walls of natural stone provide stability to the slope. To lessen the visual impact of the retaining walls, layers of vegetation were built into the structure and joints were left open which over time become vegetated. A number of steps and platforms all of which are comfortable to walk on provide access to the lowest area of the site. Most of the wide lower level of the garden is occupied by the classic Natural Pool. Regeneration zones are laid out around the trapezoid swimming area, which can be accessed from the large sun deck and a boardwalk. Above the pool, a stylised mountain stream springs from a well stone, tumbles down the cliff over rounded polished pebbles, breaks through one of the retaining walls and falls over a final cliff into the Natural Pool.
